Movies When You are Sick

If you didn't guess I have been very ill this week. And I believe I am getting better... But I still don't feel very well to tell you the truth. Anyway, I thought I would share some movies that always seem to make me feel a little better when I am sick... Or at least take my mind off it for a little while. I haven't watched any of these this week... I just didn't feel like swapping out dvd's and decided to stick w/ netflix, which is much easier to manage and sick stomach. This is probably going to me shorter than usual as well, which I am sure will relieve all of you. So here goes...

1.) The Princess Bride: Maybe the perfect kid home sick movie it never fails to give you a couple of laughs and is filled action, adventure, drama and of course true love. It's start w/ a kid sick at home listening to his grandfather read him a story... see why its perfect. I instantly related to the kid whenever I was sick, and still do. This is really a great anytime movie and most people have seen it! It's highly re-watchable.

2.) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: I don't know if it's because we had this film on tape as a kid, but I remember watching this film over and over especially when I was sick. The funny thing is that we taped it off the tv and we missed the very beginning at the night club where Willie sings anything goes. I didn't even know that part existed for years! Anyway, I think for me it was Indy trying to help all these abused children that I always loved. He comes off as both heroic an kind and at one point Indy even gets "sick" and isn't himself. Great action to me is a must when you are couch ridden, and this movie is full of it! Great movie!

3.) Goonies: This is one of the best films about childhood and kids ever made, and to this day I watch it all the time. This film is like Indiana Jones for kids! It has action, adventure, comedy, and even a few scares here and there. I think the reason I always love this film when I am sick is mainly because Mikey is sick in the film! He, like me, had asthma and sometimes wasn't allowed to go out and play. He puff's on his inhaler throughout the film until he eventually realizes he doesn't need it anymore. For me as a kid that was all I could have wanted and eventually I didn't need my inhaler anymore either.

4.) Star Wars: I would watch the entire original trilogy almost every time I was home sick as a kid and I love them all pretty equally, but I have to focus on A New Hope or Episode 4. The reason I loved ANH so much as a sick kid is Luke. I have said this countless times over the years to people and even written about it on here... But when we meet Luke he is frustrated, confused and even sad. All he wants is to become a pilot and fight the empire. He stares off in the distance of a double sunset and is pained at being another day further from his dream. He isn't sick... He's stuck... Much like me on the couch not able to play out side or go to school, he had to stay on the farm and help his uncle and aunt, and it seemed like he'd never live his dream... live his life the way he wanted. Eventually, through tragedy he does escape into the life he wants, and his victory over the empire is even sweeter. And every time I played outside w/ my friends after being sick for a week I enjoyed it that much more!

5.) The NeverEnding Story: Like The Princess Bride a boy is transported to another place and is able to escape from his daily problems through the power of books and imagination! I loved to watch this when sick as a kid because there is a sadness to this film that feels almost the same as being sick. The world is being destroyed by 'the nothing' and for me both as a kid and an adult the thought of nothingness makes me feel a bit ill. The idea is so huge and overwhelming the think about. But the cool thing about this film is that we learn that we make our own story and that only our fears and doubts get in our way... And that if you want it bad enough you can have a Luck Dragon to scare your bullies, which is really the main theme :)

Well, normally I would do about 5 or 6 more, but like I said I am still trying to get better myself. Maybe I will pop one of these films in start to feel better. As always, if you have any films you like to watch when you are sick tell me about them. Take care and live your dreams.
