Hello,
My name is Matthew M. Skillern and I live in Indianapolis, IN. I graduated from Herron School of Art and Design in 2006 with a fine arts focus in illustration and drawing. Since I was a kid I have loved art and comics... I do not remember a time when I have not been drawing and I do not remember a time when comics have not, in someway, influenced what I make. When I was in second grade, I received a Trade Paperback called Sons of Origin (from my dad) and I read it all that year, and to this day, I've been hooked. I loved the stories and characters, but more than anything I loved the imagination and the mystery of creating one of these odd little books! What was a "penciler," exactly? Why did he need an "inker?" Did Stan Lee draw the heroes as well as write them? Could I do this stuff? Well, that's why I'm here... This site is about a kid who loves comic art and Illustration and decided that he was going to make those things. Also, like many creators, I am influenced by film, television, toys and other sorts of pop culture, so don't be surprised to see these things in my work from time to time. I want to reach people and make them feel things... whether it's a smile or a tear, the point of my work is to give people comfort in knowing, that they are not alone... someone out there has felt a similar feeling you have... So enjoy my work, I think there's something for everyone... especially if you are a weirdo like me.
What is Skillful StudioS?
Skillful StudioS is the work of me... Matthew M. Skillern. I am a Indianapolis based artist and comic creator. I have self published 3 issues of my creator owned comic series appropriately named, the COMIC and recently finished The Freaking Future. The Freaking Future is an anthology of weird character driven stories taking place in (you guessed it) the future. If you like comics like Heavy Metal Magazine and 2000 AD then keep your eye out for The Freaking Future It'll be a unique bunch of weird and funny stories! My next comic will be entitled Boss Brawlers! Stay tuned for details!
I recently did some art for a horror anthology called Tales from the Cryptic Closet 2 for Guerrilla Publishing. I am happy to share that the Kickstarter was beyond successful and goals were exceeded. The books and rewards are being mailed out as of December 2020!
What else have I done?
I have worked on sketch card sets for Marvel and Lucas Film with Topps and Upperdeck. I also did some work for Viceroy Cards and Sad Littles. All of which you can find in my Card Sets Gallery. Also, I have designed logos, t -shirts, comic covers, book covers, tattoo design, portrait (pet and humans) mural painting( will consider doing it again), custom CD and record album cover art and lots more! My primary focus and specialty is comics and illustration.
How do I make my art?
I am primarily a traditional artist. I love working with pencil, ink, studio markers and water colors, but honestly I like experimenting. I have been known to use crayons, fabrics for different textures and all sorts of different sponges. Nothing is off limits when I make things. I am also able to work digitally, but traditional is king for me! I don't really believe in working in a "style"... I do believe that my natural "style" comes out no matter how I work. ( That said... I can work in different styles upon request. I have done work in the "Disney style" for example.
Do I take commissions?
Of course I do! Check out my commission page for prices. My goal is to have prices for everyone. And I am always willing to come to an agreement that will make both the client and I happy.
Where can you find me?
I am on Facebook as Matthew M. Skillern.... I am active on Instagram, I do a lot of live streaming and on the spot commissions. I love connecting with people through my art. I have said it many times before, but my art is the most me I can be. I love talking about art, comics, movies and pop culture in general. If you want to see how I work... tune in to a stream sometime. I like to talk while I draw! I always have plenty of in person appearances as well! See my Appearances page to see where I will be!
Thanks for reading a little about me. If you found me, then you must like weird art that is not cookie cutter and I appreciate it! I know my work is not for all (hopefully there is a little something for most who give it a shot), but maybe that is why you found me.
Thanks so much!
Matt
